Whisky Galore

Written by Compton Mckenzie, adapted by Philip Goulding

Directed by Dave Ward and David Burns

Players Theatre’s production of Whisky Galore, adapted by Philip Goulding from the beloved novel by Compton Mackenzie, is a lively, inventive and thoroughly entertaining piece of theatre...

"This production embraced theatrical storytelling in its purest form. With just seven performers portraying dozens of characters between them, the show relied not on elaborate scenery or realism, but on creativity, pace, and strong ensemble work. The result was a fast-moving, self-aware and joyfully playful production that never took itself too seriously.

"The staging throughout was inventive and cleverly executed. Sections of the set folded open to reveal interiors such as the school or island homes, while a simple hinged sign on the classroom blackboard switched between the names of the two schools depending on the location. Minimal props allowed for quick transitions between scenes, keeping the pace brisk...

"...Indeed, the versatility of the entire cast was remarkable. Each actor took on multiple roles, with rapid costume changes and sharply defined characterisations ensuring that every individual felt distinct. It was no surprise to learn that backstage had reportedly been somewhat chaotic given the sheer number of characters involved, yet on stage everything appeared slick and seamless...

"...Players Theatre’s Whisky Galore was a triumph of imagination over scale – a production that proved how inventive staging, committed performances and a strong ensemble spirit could create something truly delightful. Fast-paced, witty and packed with inventive touches, it captured the mischievous charm of Mackenzie’s story while celebrating the very best of theatrical creativity."
