Youth Group News - January 2010

It's that time of year again. The resolutions are out of the window, it's dark all the time, and I'm frantically scouring websites and bookshops for inspiration for our Youth group.

Rachel and I were genuinely delighted with the performances in The Infant School Nativity and A Christmas Carol. Despite being scheduled against the final of The X Factor, we managed two very decent audiences, and two solid performances from the cast. In particular, some members are becoming confident and versatile performers, and should - in my opinion - be cast in adult productions also. I know that this is something that Plays & Casting are looking into.

We are now making progress with new members and using the time from January to the end of March to explore different aspects of stagecraft such as improvisation and giving the Youth a look at what a director does and how and why. It is hoped that these sessions give a broader understanding of how Players works, and will pay dividends in their future performances. We meet every Tuesday whenever a main house play isn't scheduled, between 7 pm and 9 pm. We have an open door policy, so if ever any adult members want to pop down, then please feel free.

Our next performance will be a Showcase of the Youth performance work at 2.30pm on Sunday 28th March. This was a lovely session last year, giving parents and families the chance to meet each other, and get to see the work of our members in a more informal setting. We very much hope that you can join us then.

During the Summer term we will be working towards our Summer Production on 17th & 18th July entitled Blackout by Davey Anderson.

The pressures of the current school curriculum means that those students aged 15 and 16 are under a different sort of regime these days.  Gone are the days of years of study, with a final Summer exam.  In 2010, students are assessed more or less continually, and have practice exams, mock exams, modular exams, resit exams, and a wealth of coursework.  The result of this is that a lot of our current members may find the workload a stretch, and decide that "something has to give."  Therefore, if you, or someone you know, is interested in joining our Youth section, then please do get in touch with Val Middleton-Egan (Youth Group) or 0161 439 7863, or 07921 511796 or me (0161 278 1455 or 07830 134931).

Most importantly, my thanks to those members who regularly support us in our endeavours; it is never taken for granted and very much appreciated.
