Our programme for the 2008 - 9 Season:

September 27th -
                      October 4th

Albert Nobbs by Gordon Steel
directed by David Ward

This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd

Albert finds that retirement is not quite what he expected. He is bored and nagged interminably by his wife Connie, whose sudden death in a road accident turns his life upside down. He becomes despondent and wonders how he can carry on but then Connie returns as a ghost to set about organising a more fulfilling retirement for Albert. A sort of working class Blithe Spirit, the play is delightfully funny.

November 15th - 22nd

Cat's Cradle by Leslie Sands
directed by Jean Cox

This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd

In a desperate attempt to resurrect his career in the CID, Inspector Frost reopens the kidnap and possible murder case which he failed to solve some years earlier and which was responsible for his fall from grace. With new evidence he returns to the village which was the scene of the crime but soon realises he is facing a conspiracy of silence. With the help of a local journalist he finally gets to the truth - and a conclusion that will surprise you. A good tense thriller. Incidentally, you may get a certain sense of déjà vu. This is the original play on which the TV series “Frost” starring David Jason was based.

January 17th - 24th 2009

The Prisoner of Second Avenue by Neil Simon
directed by Derek Slater

A play by one of America’s funniest and most prolific writers. It is a while since we did one of his plays (Last of the Red Hot Lovers in 1998) so this one is  long overdue.

The story revolves around the problems of Mel and Edna, a middle-aged couple living in New York. Mel has just lost his job and has to cope with being unemployed in middle age. They also have to cope with an intense summer heat wave, a prolonged garbage strike, noisy neighbours, and even a robbery of their apartment during broad daylight. Mel eventually suffers a nervous breakdown and it is up to his brother Harry, his sisters and Edna to bring Mel back to reality. Another gem by a writer who never fails to entertain.

March 14th - 21st

Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare
directed by
David Burns

You don’t really expect me to condense the plot of this into a few lines now, do you? Yes? Alright, here goes.

Orsino, Duke of Illyria loves Olivia who does not return his affections. Viola is shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria and (because this is Shakespeare), disguises herself as a boy, Cesario. He (she) is employed by Orsino who sends him (her) with a love message to Olivia who promptly falls in love with him (her).  Then there are Malvolio, Toby Belch, and Andrew Aguecheek, all of whom fancy their chances with Olivia but a sub plot involving a letter, a ring and yellow stockings sorts them out. Further complications are added by the arrival of Viola’s twin brother Sebastian who Olivia mistakes for Viola/Cesario who she loves.

May 9th - 16th

Murdered to Death by Peter Gordon
directed by John Price

This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd

This is a hilarious spoof of the best Agatha Christie thriller traditions. Murder in a country manor house with the typical set of characters, Bunting, the butler; an English Colonel with the obligatory stiff upper lip; a shady French art dealer and his moll; the bumbling local police and an amateur sleuth who seems to attract murder – they are all here and caught up in the side splitting antics that should have you laughing so much that you won’t really care ‘whodunnit’.

All plays are performed at  Players Theatre, Anfield Road, Cheadle Hulme, SK8 5EX. Performances start at 7.45 pm. Plays run every evening from Saturday to Saturday, excluding Sundays. Ticketing
